MOVIE NEWS – Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has a global opening weekend total of $282 million at the international box office!

Disney/Marvel’s The Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is estimated to have had a global opening of $282.1 million. This far exceeds forecasts, which were cautious given the uncertainty of the Asian markets, especially China and Korea. Ultimately, it was surpassed by $28.1M and $13.6M, respectively. The international revenue weekend was $168.1M in 52 different markets.

The overseas launch was 70% ahead of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film and performed similarly to the second part (which benefited from the May Day holiday in many markets). If China is excluded from the comparison, the opening weekend of the third part was 98% ahead of GOTG and 13% ahead of GOTG2.

In the end, all regions performed better than expected. The James Gunn-directed film was helped by solid propaganda. Japan (where Super Mario Bros Movie was the best), Saudi Arabia (John Wick: Chapter 4) and Egypt (Evil Dead Rise) were all markets where the non-local film debuted at number one.

GOTG3 outperformed the previous instalment in several markets, including Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, Korea, Brazil and Mexico.

The top 5 markets at the time of opening were China ($28.1 million), the UK ($14.7 million), Korea ($13.6 million), Mexico ($13 million) and France ($8.2 million).

In IMAX, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 grossed $25 million on 1,550 screens in 82 markets, the highest global total for the format in 2023. It was also the 3rd highest for Marvel since The Avengers: The Endgame. Overseas, it grossed $14.3 million.

And as for Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie, it brought in another $50.3 million in 79 overseas markets. This brings its total overseas to $637.2 million and worldwide to $1.155 billion. It is now the 5th biggest animated film worldwide and Universal’s 2nd biggest animated film.
