MOVIE NEWS – Members of the royal family are often targeted in films and series, but this time a particularly harsh comment was made about Princess Catherine in Priyanka Chopra’s latest series, Citadel.
Citadel is an exciting spy thriller available on Prime. One of the series’s main characters is Priyanka Chopra, who used to be Meghan Markle’s girlfriend. In the third episode, there is a scene in which the characters played by Richard Madden and Balduino Basto are conversing, assisted by Priyanka Chopra from a distance. During the dialogue, Balduino Basto says:
“Chief of the Armed Forces? You might as well ask how I can get between the legs of the Duchess of Cambridge.”
The sentence shocked viewers, as it is clearly aimed at Princess Catherine, who is now known as the Duchess of Wales. Many believe that this comment was intentional and demeaning to Princess Catherine. Fans were outraged and declared that they no longer wanted to watch the series. They believe that this is all very unbecoming of the royal family.
But what exactly is Citadel? Why is it worth talking about? Citadel is a spy thriller series that follows a global spy agency until it was destroyed eight years ago by a mysterious organization called Manticore. During the attack, the agents’ memories were erased and they began new lives in different locations. But when the Manticore resurfaces, the agents must return to their old lives and relive their past.
The series was created by Josh Appelbaum, Bryan Oh and David Weil and produced under the supervision of the Russo brothers who wrote Endgame. The main characters are Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who were once lovers, but now turn against each other. Among the secondary characters, we can meet names such as Stanley Tucci, Lesley Manville or Ashleigh Cummings.
Citadel was an ambitious project from Amazon that started as a series with a record budget. According to the plans, they wanted to present a story set in several countries and languages, in which different actors play spies. The first season was the English version, filmed in India and Italy. And the second season would have been an Indian language version directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. would have settled.
However, the series did not go smoothly. Filming had to be stopped several times due to the coronavirus epidemic, significantly increasing the budget and postponing the show. In addition, there were several creative disagreements among the creators, which led to the resignation or firing of several writers and directors. And the end result was not as successful as they expected. Critics and viewers alike received a mixed response to the series, many finding it boring, stereotyped, and confusing.
The Citadel therefore did not live up to expectations. Rather, it just became a forgettable spy thriller that failed to live up to its potential. Maybe it would have been better if it didn’t try to offend or provoke the viewers with an offensive comment about Princess Catherine, but instead paid more attention to the story, characters and action.
