The developer of one of this year’s biggest first-day Xbox Game Pass launches has announced that the game’s first add-on will arrive next month.

 

 

The developers of the historical fantasy action game Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty have announced that the game will receive its first DLC on June 29. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty’s upcoming add-on is titled Battle of Zhongyuan and will introduce a new scenario with lots of new content. It will also be available immediately on Xbox Game Pass.

Team Ninja announced the first expansion for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty on May 26: Battle of Zhongyuan, featuring a new scenario, new stages, a new difficulty level, new weapon types and new enemies.

The developers have not provided much concrete information about the upcoming expansion. But they promised to reveal more as the release date approaches. Team Ninja did not talk about the plot of the DLC. It will most likely be set in the early period of the Three Kingdoms era, after the events of the base game.

Zhongyuan refers to a region in east-central China along the Yellow River. It is often considered the birthplace of Chinese civilization. In ancient China, people considered it the centre of the world. The title Battle of Zhongyuan may refer to the historic Battle of Guandu. It was fought by the warlords Cao Cao and Yuan Shao in 200 AD. It laid the foundation for the establishment of the Cao Wei Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period of China.

Cao Cao and Yuan Shao were the main characters in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. The end of the game foreshadowed the events of the Three Kingdoms period. It seems that Wo Long’s publisher, Koe Tecmo, has a particular fascination with the Three Kingdoms. Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the Three Kingdoms have featured it in several generations of games.

The most recent of these games, Dynasty Warriors 9 and Romance of the Three Kingdoms 14, were released in 2018 and 2020, respectively.

Of course, Wo Long’s gameplay has more in common with Team Ninja’s Nioh series of historical fantasy games than any other franchise. Sadly, despite receiving a reasonably positive reception at launch, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty failed to match the success of Nioh. Hopefully, the Battle of Zhongyuan DLC will give the game the boost it needs.
