According to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the organization behind E3 reports that E3 2024 and 2025 are canceled are false…
“The Entertainment Software Association is currently in conversation with ESA members and other stakeholders about E3 2024 (and beyond), and no final decisions about the events have been made. We expect E3 to continue to be a part of ESA’s storytelling. We are currently in conversation with several stakeholders about what E3 2024 (and beyond) should look like to serve the interactive entertainment industry best,” ESA first wrote to Axios writer Stephen Totilo, who then shared another statement from the organization, and therefore may seem a bit repetitive.
ESA is thus trying to refute what the Los Angeles Tourism Board wrote in its presentation (the declining number of nights spent there was written as a footnote: E3 2024 and 2025 are not happening, according to them), which either means that the commission knows something the public doesn’t, or that the tourism board is overly pessimistic about the loss of traffic due to E3, which is understandable, given that the Los Angeles Convention Center hosts the annual event that used to be a significant event for the gaming industry.
And in March, ESA explained the cancellation of E3 2023 (which would have been organized by ReedPop) by saying, “We were off to a strong start. There was interest among exhibitors, industry players, media, and fans. Ultimately, however, some challenges proved too large to surmount. First, several companies have reported that the timeline for game development has been altered since the start of the COVID pandemic. Second, economic headwinds have caused several companies to reassess how they invest in large marketing events. And third, companies are starting to experiment with how to find the right balance between in-person events and digital marketing opportunities.”
The ESA is trying to save its skin, or the LA Tourism Board has been misinformed. One of them is lying.
