On Amazon’s platform for streaming, banning has so far not meant a complete ban.
If someone bans you from their channel on Twitch, it currently means you can’t chat. You can still follow the broadcast. This situation could change with a new feature available to everyone in September (and it will be optional so that it won’t be automatically mandatory for everyone). A Twitch streamer, Lowco, has posted on Twitter about what to expect.
A feature will be rolling out to everyone in September, whereby if you ban someone, not only will you take away their chat privileges, but they won’t be able to watch the broadcast (however, this limitation can probably be avoided by logging out or using a private window). Twitch is also considering banning based on IP address, so banned users won’t be able to log out and make a new account. This situation can also be bypassed by using a dynamic IP address, so all you would need to do is restart your router, but it’s not that common in the US; it’s more common for everyone in North America to have a fixed IP address…
Returning to the extension of the ban, this move only prevents you from watching the live broadcast, as archived recordings and clips (short videos) will still be allowed, but Lowco says this could also change in the future. It all depends on the feedback Amazon receives if we had to guess…
An exciting situation: while Twitch is looking to strengthen the level of banning, we reported in the news earlier today that the blocking feature on Twitch will be removed (although it is expected to be replaced by something else, and the ability to ban private messages will remain). Thus, the two sites are going in two different directions, and it will be questionable whether Twitch’s or Twitter’s approach will be the longer-term winner. It is too early to judge at this stage.
