Alan Wake 2: The PlayStation 5 Port Is A Bit Lacking [VIDEO]

The game from Remedy Entertainment available today is not on the same graphical level as the PC.

Alan Wake 2 is definitely better on PC, but you’ll need a pretty powerful configuration (obviously an Intel Core i9-14900K, GeForce RTX 4090 is the best for this, but we don’t have a whole year’s income set aside for that…), but let’s look at Sony’s hardware instead, as Digital Foundry’s analysis embedded below also focuses more on PlayStation 5. We’ll have to wait a bit for their feedback on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S visuals.

The PlayStation 5 version is close to the maximum of the PC edition in terms of geometry or detail, for example, so the PS5 has nothing to be ashamed of in terms of basic visual quality. However, it lacks ray tracing (reflections, path tracing), so reflections and shadows, for example, lag behind the other platforms. (It’s true that even the best PC graphics can’t be made to work on all configurations, so Remedy has planned ahead with Alan Wake and Saga Anderson’s story).

In terms of resolution and performance, the soon-to-be-released PlayStation 5, which retires the original pair but is no cheaper, is in a better situation. Quality mode aims for 30 FPS and Performance for 60 FPS. The former aims for image quality, but the native resolution is a bit poor, as Alan Wake 2 runs natively at 1272p. It uses AMD’s upscaling technology, FSR 2, to boost the visuals to 4K. Performance mode has a native resolution of only 872p and scales up to 1440p with FSR 2. FSR doesn’t work perfectly (aliasing!). Quality mode can hold at around 30fps most of the time (mostly indoors), but drops to around 25fps in some outdoor areas. Performance mode can maintain 60 FPS indoors, but there is some performance degradation (~50 FPS) outdoors.

Remedy’s game isn’t graphically ugly, but it is a bit lacking. But since the Finnish team has shown a big improvement compared to Control, it’s not bad as a starting point.
