Beware of Smelling the Steam Deck: Valve Warns the Steam Deck owners!

Valve advises Steam Deck owners to avoid inhaling vapors from the device’s vents. A meme circulating on social media that the smell of the vapors is attractive has raised concerns at the company. According to Valve, while there is no immediate health risk, direct inhalation of fumes from the vent is not recommended. In order to protect the health of the users, the company asks to abandon the habit.

Valve, the maker of the popular Steam Deck handheld game console, recently alerted users to an unusual but increasingly common phenomenon. A meme has surfaced on the Steam Deck subreddit and other social media platforms that users find the vapors coming from the device’s vents attractive and enjoy inhaling them. This habit caused concern at Valve, who asked owners to avoid inhaling the fumes.

The reason behind this phenomenon is that many Steam Deck owners have reported that they find the smell emanating from the device’s vents to be pleasant and therefore deliberately inhale the vapors. A Reddit user, Metapod100, reached out to Steam Support asking if the vapors are safe to inhale. In response, Valve confirmed that while there are no immediate safety concerns with general use of the Steam Deck, direct inhalation of vapors from the vents is not recommended.

According to the company, the fumes from the vents are not toxic, but in accordance with general health recommendations, it is not recommended to inhale exhaust gases from electronic devices. Valve’s customer service emphasized that while they understand the nature of the meme, they advise users to avoid inhaling the fumes from the vents to protect their health.

The company’s announcement likely won’t completely stop the meme from spreading or inhaling the vapors, but they do emphasize the importance of the health of Steam Deck owners. Valve’s warning also draws attention to the need to pay attention to new phenomena associated with modern technology, especially health and safety.
