TECH NEWS – The two more expensive iPhone models planned for this year may have compromises in order to have more storage space.

DigiTimes reports that the Cupertino-based tech company is looking to cut costs and is therefore looking to cut back on the performance of some of its handsets, although the A-series chips in the iPhone offer decent performance, storage space could be a deal breaker if you have slower read and write speeds. Recently, it was rumored that Apple would use higher-density Quad-Level Cell (or QLC NAND) flash memory in the 1TB version of the iPhone 16 Pro (and presumably Pro Max). The company is still actively considering whether to switch to QLC or stick with the Triple-Level Cell (TLC) solution for faster read and write speeds.

If Apple does switch to QLC, you may want to opt for the 512GB model for the best performance. However, QLC NAND has several advantages. It could reduce space requirements in the device and you could get up to 2TB of storage for your phone. TLC, on the other hand, is much more efficient in terms of continuous read and write operations, but it could all be decided by optimization. And maybe the price, since the 1TB version of the iPhone 15 Pro costs $1,600, and that’s $200 more than the 512GB version. It’s a significant difference, and we don’t even want to think about how big Apple’s profit margin is on this (although we have written about the fact that the price of SSDs will increase enormously…).

For the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, Apple wants to make room for more advanced camera sensors. That’s why it wants to create a slightly larger design, and that may also play a role in Apple’s move from TLC to QLC for storage. All of this is not official yet, and there are still several months until Apple unveils the iPhone 16.
