Remote work has many advantages, not the least, that employees can get ahead with games even during working hours. However, for those who are forced to work in the workplace, it is more complicated. Luckily, a genius spotted by Gizmodo has just imported legendary RPGs, including Fallout, right into Excel!
On his channel, YouTuber Dynamic Pear offers a demo that could change your life: an RPG adapted from the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout… in an Excel spreadsheet.
The game can be downloaded from its site, along with a detailed explanation of how it works.
In the video’s description, Dynamic Pear says that he “always wanted to make his own video games, but never had the ability or time to do it.” His unhealthy passion for Excel led him to adapt the world of his favourite games to Microsoft’s spreadsheet program.
Nevertheless, we can guess that the development of the program still took a lot of time. Well, much more expertise than it seems at first. The structure of the entities is reminiscent of object-oriented programming, allowing him to design turn-based battles whose properties evolve under certain conditions.
Fallout as .xls?!
These “objects” evolve on a map, also represented by the cells of the table, and allow the player to move from square to square to the places where missions await him.
The general mechanics, the mission system and the clashes are reminiscent of board role-playing games, which – thanks to a minor miracle of retrofuturism – are now managed by office software born in the eighties.
This isn’t the first time Dynamic Pear has turned a spreadsheet into a game board. It has already created versions of Baldur’s Gate, Pokémon and even a life simulation similar to The Sims.
So Fallout has now also been ported to Excel. The franchise has been around since 1997, with half a dozen games, and has been revived since it was adapted into a series, which has been airing on Prime Video since the beginning of April. If you felt that the series’s first season was insufficient, you can rest assured that from now on, you can continue the experience with the pivot tables.
In any case, a whole new universe opens up. Will we soon be able to visit San Andreas in the PowerPoint version of Grand Theft Auto? Or can we play multiplayer Call of Duty in Outlook? Accounting, finance and sales administration could be the next Eldorado of games.
