TECH NEWS – Apple is in no rush to develop a competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, so we’ll have to wait at least two years (if not more) for the Cupertino company’s foldable product.
Instead, Apple is planning a foldable hybrid that could appear towards the end of 2025. It could be a mix of a MacBook and an iPad with a 20.3-inch display. This was written by analyst Jeff Pu and reported by 9to5Mac. It’s not the first we’ve heard of the project, as another analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, reported on it, but he mentioned a later date (2027) and he didn’t mention a foldable iPhone.
Pu said that the new format of Apple’s biggest moneymaker will reach the public in 2026. This phone will have two display sizes: either 7.9″ or 8.3″. The company has created several prototypes, but there are concerns about their durability, as well as fears about the design: it would be disturbing for Apple if the visible creases that have appeared on other phones of similar form factor released in recent years appeared here.
Price is also a determining factor in this case. Charging too much for a foldable iPhone would scare customers away from Apple and they would opt for the current format instead. This is why the US company may be planning to release a foldable hybrid model first, because a smaller device would have a higher chance of failure, and since the iPhone is bought like hotcakes, more defective products would damage their reputation and financial results, and they would have to provide more replacements.
Samsung, Apple’s mobile rival, has already released its first foldable phone in 2019, and if Apple has managed to survive these five years without a similar product, it may only give in if the quality meets the high bar and thus “deserves” the price tag it gets.
