Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut: Cross-Play in Beta on PC!?

Originally developed by Sucker Punch, but ported to PC by Nixxes Software, the game will reportedly run well on Valve’s portable PC.

Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut is the latest Sony game to make it to the PC. We’ve also heard that it will require a PlayStation Network account, though the story mode, which can be played solo, is said not to require one (but pre-orders on Steam have been suspended in many countries and territories). The game does have a multiplayer mode, Legends, and it’s understandable that Sony is pushing for PSN integration, although the company doesn’t take into account that its network doesn’t serve all countries.

Interestingly, Nixxes Software says that it will launch in a cross-play beta between PlayStation and PC: “As previously announced, [Ghost of Tsushima:] Legends’ co-op multiplayer mode will include cross-play between players on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC. Legends will be functional on PC at launch, but you won’t be automatically matched with players on different platforms. Cross-play will launch in beta, so you can try it out by inviting your PlayStation Network friends”. It’s like a get-out clause for Sony: If there are too many complaints on the PlayStation Network, they can remove this mandatory PSN account requirement from the game once the beta period is over.

And there’s another oddity: according to Nixxes, the game has been fully optimized for the Steam Deck and other portable PCs, but is still listed as “Unsupported” on Steam because it requires Windows to access the PlayStation Network, and the Steam Deck is Linux-based (SteamOS) by default: “We know that many of you are eager to play Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck. We’re pleased to announce that the single-player experience, including the Iki Island expansion, can be enjoyed on the Steam Deck and similar handheld gaming PCs, as we’ve worked extensively to optimize performance and deliver the best possible experience on these devices. You may notice that Steam will mark the game as “Unsupported” for Steam Deck. This is due to the fact that the Legends co-op multiplayer mode requires Windows to access the PlayStation Network built-in features,” Nixxes added.

Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut will be available for PC on May 16.
