MOVIE NEWS – How fun is The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt? Horror icon Stephen King also gave his opinion…
Acclaimed horror icon Stephen King questions the fun (or lack thereof) of the latest action film, The Fall Guy. Even though The Fall Guy underperformed at the box office, it did well with critics and audiences. They mostly agree on one thing: the movie is really, really fun. The Fall Guy is loosely based on the 1980s ABC series of the same name, starring Lee Majors, Douglas Barr and Heather Thomas as a trio of Hollywood stuntmen. Here, Ryan Gosling plays a down-and-out stunt performer who must find the missing star of his ex-girlfriend’s blockbuster movie.
Given that Gosling recently gave a terrific performance as Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, we could assume that it would be exhilarating to see him in an action-packed and explosive film.
To be fair, King didn’t say The Fall Guy wasn’t fun. Responding to writer Linwood Barclay’s post that “Audiences may not have flocked to it in theaters but The Fall Guy is great fun”, King countered: “Yes, definitely fun, but great fun? Perhaps not.”
King’s comment drew mixed reactions. Some agreed with him, some didn’t (some users didn’t even know what The Fall Guy was). However, overall reviews of the film remain overwhelmingly positive. Many users on X have praised it as a fun film (“escapist fun”, “wild ride”, and “peak” are just some of the terms used) with excellent performances from the leads (Gosling and Emily Blunt).
Critics and social media users have singled out the film’s stunning stunts as one of the standouts of The Fall Guy.
Unfortunately, the film’s box office performance did not live up to these positive reviews. It has grossed just over $145 million worldwide since its May 3 premiere.
The Fall Guy is currently in theatres and available digitally. The film follows Colt Seavers, played by Gosling, as he works on his ex-girlfriend’s (Blunt) directorial debut, an action film. Things get complicated when he discovers a conspiracy surrounding the film’s protagonist (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu and Winston Duke round out the cast.
