Was It Just A Marketing Ploy?! Sony Has Quietly Changed The PS5 Packaging

TECH NEWS – It was one of the most controversial aspects of the PS5 box, but Sony quietly ditched it…

If you have a PS5 at home, you probably kept the box. Most gamers won’t throw it away, even if Sony doesn’t see the value in it. A few years ago, one of the biggest debates surrounding the PlayStation was what to read when you first saw the packaging. We have seen that the device is 8K compatible, as the box itself suggests. As it turned out later, this can be considered a marketing ploy from PlayStation’s point of view, and many players consider it misleading advertising. (While the PS5 is technically indeed compatible with 8K TVs and monitors, 8K gaming is not available on the console as Sony has limited current capabilities to native 4K.)

However, it looks like new PS5 owners may be faced with no mention of 8K on the PS5 box anymore, as Sony appears to have quietly removed it without public notice.

As reported on social media, Digital Foundry’s John Linneman believes this “should have been done years ago.” There are several reasons for this information.

One is that 8K is “not only not suitable for these machines, but 8K displays are not desirable.” In fact, he says he doesn’t even want it. The hardware and software expert also mentions the case of The Touryst, the first game capable of native 8K and 60 FPS. But it’s clear that Sony didn’t support this resolution, as it focused primarily on 4K.

Why did Sony put 8K on PS5 boxes?

Although only Sony really knows the answer, the company wrote in an FAQ in November 2020: “PS5 supports 8K displays at launch and will be able to generate up to 8K resolution when content becomes available in a future system software update, with compatible software.” Furthermore, some gamers believe that the company may have removed this branding because the PS5 Pro will be the one to support 8K. We’ve heard such news before. This would be achieved with the PSSR, with a PS5 Pro-exclusive technology capable of higher resolution and FPS rate.
