One in Six Sumo Digital Employees may be Made Redundant!

The worst case scenario is that Sumo Group will have to lay off fifteen percent of its workforce, and with a presence in several countries, it is not just one or two major areas where employees could lose their jobs.

Sumo Group has announced on their website that they will also have to lay off more of their staff. The announcement reads: “Every day, the incredibly talented people at Sumo Studios are dedicated to creating great games and delivering groundbreaking experiences to gamers around the world. That work and dedication over the past 21 years has helped put Sumo on the map and build a family of studios that is second to none, and we are incredibly proud of what Sumo has become.

While Sumo has been able to weather many of the recent difficulties faced by the gaming industry, we have not been immune, and reshaping operations across the company to better meet the challenges expected in the coming months is a path we must now take to ensure the future security of the company. The difficult decision to reduce our costs across the business in a number of ways is a direct result of these challenges and will unfortunately include a reduction in the number of people the business can support.

Every alternative is being considered to limit the impact on our employees, but unfortunately this process of change will affect up to 15% of our employees across the Group in Canada, the UK, Poland, the Czech Republic and India. This is an incredibly difficult process for everyone at Sumo and our focus is now on supporting our people and working with our partners on their games as we move forward to ensure we emerge from this difficult time ready for the future,” Sumo wrote.

Sumo Digital helped develop a number of games (Hogwarts Legacy, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League), but they also had projects of their own (LittleBigPlanet 3, Crackdown 3, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). They didn’t escape layoffs either.

Anikó, our news editor and communication manager, is more interested in the business side of the gaming industry. She worked at banks, and she has a vast knowledge of business life. Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
