MOVIE NEWS – Sony and Legendary announced Wednesday afternoon that the live-action Street Fighter movie based on Capcom’s classic video games had been released in theatres on March 20, 2026.

News of the Street Fighter release date comes shortly after it was revealed that twin Australian filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, best known for their A24 horror film Talk to Me, had stepped down as project directors. Details about the plot of the film adaptation are being kept under wraps for now, but based on today’s news, we can expect to hear about the new director of the IP-based project soon.

Legendary announced in April 2023 that it had acquired the live-action film and TV rights to one of the most iconic and influential franchises in video game history, Street Fighter. The games centre around an international martial arts competition where fighters from all over the world compete against each other to prove their strength and skills.

The franchise gained massive popularity with the release of Street Fighter II in 1991, which introduced revolutionary mechanics such as combo attacks and special moves and greatly influenced arcade and home console gaming.

Subsequent titles expanded the game’s universe. New characters, a complex plot, and improved graphics and game mechanics were introduced.

Since the franchise began in 1987, more than 49 million units have been sold worldwide. Street Fighter has become one of the best-known and highest-grossing franchises of all time. The latest instalment, SF 6, was released last June for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam.

In the past, games have also inspired films such as Street Fighter starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and The Legend of Chun-Li. Although the movies have their own fan base, they have never been able to live up to the success of the games.

For now, it is questionable what we can expect from this production. However, the majority are optimistic. The franchise could really use a great adaptation.
