The game from the Dutch studio won’t be popping up everywhere, and it’s not exactly a big-budget AAA project, so it could justifiably be multiplatform… but why won’t it be?
The next game from Guerrilla Games was announced at Summer Game Fest, and it’s a spin-off in the post-apocalyptic franchise. The Dutch studio is teaming up with Studio Gobo to bring the story to PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. One platform left out of the list (well, two, but let’s skip the technical details for now): where is the Xbox Series version of the series? James Windeler, Director of Narrative at Guerrilla Games, told Game File:
“Right now we’re just really focused on pushing this hardware to its limits and making this game look as absolutely amazing as possible on this hardware, and you know, we don’t really have anything to announce about Xbox right now,” Windeler said. That’s not a very convincing explanation! If they’re pushing the limits of PlayStation 5, why is the game being made for Nintendo Switch? Development is usually based on the lowest common denominator, or the weakest platform. That’s the Switch, of course. So the comment about pushing the limits is absolutely not true. The Xbox Series X is mostly on par with the PlayStation 5!
The truth is that Sony just doesn’t want to release their games on a competing console. MLB The Show is an exception, but it’s an annual sports game based on the American baseball league, so MLB probably forces the company to go multiplatform there. The other interesting thing is that online co-op will not be supported, so there will be no way to play through the story with a friend over the Internet. This is a standard feature in Lego games…
Lego Horizon Adventures is coming to PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch later this year. It will be Aloy’s debut on the big N platform.
