Serious Declines in Video Game Hardware Sales in the US!

TECH NEWS – According to Circana, spending on video game hardware, content, and accessories in the United States fell by 5% in June 2024 compared to June 2023. Despite the decline, the total revenue still reached a substantial $4.6 billion. The first half of the fiscal year saw a slight 1% increase in spending compared to 2023, totaling $27.3 billion.

In June, content spending dropped by 2%, bringing in $4.1 billion. Surprisingly, mobile gaming content spending rose by 12%, along with a 4% increase in non-mobile subscription content spending, such as Xbox Game Pass. However, a 26% decline in console content spending offset these gains.

Some of the top-selling games for June 2024 include Elden Ring, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Hogwarts Legacy, and the surprising Kingdom Hearts: Integrum Masterpiece. The surprise comes from its significant jump in rankings, moving from 399th place last month to 3rd place this month. This surge in sales is likely due to the game’s recent availability on Steam, which fans had long awaited. Previously, it was only available on the Nintendo Switch via Cloud saves.

For PlayStation, many of the most played games are free-to-play. Roblox, Multiversus, and Fortnite are among the top three. However, Elden Ring and Grand Theft Auto V also made it into the top ten games played in June 2024.

In terms of mobile gaming, Roblox remains one of the top games, with a 15% increase in revenue month over month. This growth was predominantly driven by a UA campaign, which increased downloads by 22%.

June’s video game hardware spending fell by an additional 37%. The first half of the year saw the Nintendo Switch suffer the most, with a 48% decline, followed by the PlayStation 5 with a 28% drop, and the Xbox series with an 18% fall.

Despite the significant decline for the PlayStation 5, it was the best-selling console out of the three, leading the month’s hardware market in unit and dollar sales. Following the PlayStation 5, the Nintendo Switch ranked second in unit sales, with the Xbox Series coming second in dollar sales.

Overall, June 2024’s spending was somewhat rockier than June 2023’s, but there remains a silver lining for the month. Shadow of the Erdtree bolstered Elden Ring, and Roblox has seen a massive resurgence in audiences of all ages, which may continue to boost mobile market sales.
