Deadpool & Wolverine: The Death of an Iconic Marvel Character Shocked the Star

MOVIE NEWS – Emma Corrin, as Cassandra Nova, puts an end to Johnny Storm’s (Chris Evans) role in Deadpool & Wolverine. Evans, best known for his portrayal of Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, entered the Marvel world as the hot-headed rebel Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four in 2005. Evans’ cameo in the new Deadpool film is incredible but very brief, as Cassandra Nova kills him instantly.

When asked how it felt to kill Johnny, Corrin said in an interview with British GQ:

“Absolute madness. I felt really bad during the screening because after watching it at the Lincoln Center in New York, it was packed with fans. Everyone was excited when they saw him on screen. Then three minutes later, I killed him. I felt awful. I was hiding in my chair. Yes, it was weird – I wouldn’t have thought I’d be doing this if you’d asked me a few years ago.”

The sequel, built on the success of Deadpool and Deadpool 2, stars Ryan Reynolds. This third film is the first in the series produced by Marvel Studios after acquiring 20th Century Fox.

Corrin, known from The Crown, Pennyworth, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and A Murder at the End of the World, said in the same interview:

“This is something [Marvel films] do very well: cameos. They give people what they want. They provide cameos but don’t use them gratuitously. Each has a purpose. And I think you can really feel that, or I hope people do, because I think they use them very skillfully.”

Keeping Secrets on Set

Cassandra Nova (Corrin) may have killed Johnny Storm shortly after the Fantastic Four member was captured in the Void, but Chris Evans loved reprising the role he first played in 2005 and again in the 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. However, Mr. Storm wasn’t the only significant surprise appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. Whether it was Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, or Channing Tatum’s Gambit, there were strict security measures on set to keep the cameos a secret. Corrin said in the same interview:

“I was on the same set with Chris, but I met Jennifer, Channing, and Wesley, though I don’t think we had any scenes together. We didn’t even shoot together. All these scenes were filmed at Pinewood Studios, so it was all very internal. I think, you know, Marvel films – as much as people want spoilers – I think, and I hope people understand, there’s nothing more satisfying for an audience than seeing the film for the first time and not knowing who’s going to show up on screen.”

Corrin continued:

“You don’t want that surprise to be spoiled. So I think everyone in the production really knew that. And yes, they felt how big this was going to be. You should have heard the screams when these guys showed up on screen. It was the most satisfying thing, so joyful, and it just kept getting better.”

Corrin’s role as Cassandra Nova is likely to be one of the best villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And Deadpool & Wolverine continues its box office success into its second weekend. The long-awaited team-up of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the MCU has already grossed over $658.9 million worldwide (according to The Numbers) just over a week after its release, and the superhero film is expected to bring in another $94 million at the domestic box office during its second weekend.
