“Does Elon Musk Stir Controversy Too Often? Get an Arrest Warrant!”

This statement was made by a senior ex-Twitter executive, so it sounds like he too is fed up with the owner of Twitter, Tesla and SpaceX.

This person is Bruce Daisley. He was Twitter’s Vice President for EMEA, Europe, Middle East and Africa. He shared his views on The Guardian after Musk essentially referred to a civil war over the riots in the UK (where the right-wing government got a huge hammering in the election…). According to Daisley, there is a simple solution to stop Musk from stirring up trouble: arrest him!

Regarding the riots in Liverpool, Musk wrote that civil war was inevitable, to which many in the British government responded critically. He also slammed the current prime minister, Kier Starmer, and then spread misleading news that the country was planning to set up detention camps on the Falkland Islands for people involved in the riots.

“In the short term, Musk and his fellow executives should be reminded of their criminal liability for their actions under existing laws. Britain’s Online Safety Act 2023 should be strengthened with immediate effect. In my experience, [the] threat of personal sanction is far more effective on executives than the risk of corporate fines. If Musk continues to stir up trouble, a warrant for his arrest might produce fireworks from his fingertips, but as an international jet-setter it would have the effect of focusing his mind,” Daisley wrote.

He’s right: what’s to stop someone (who is also very powerful and influential) from spreading misinformation and fanning the flames where tensions are high? Starmer’s response was that there should be an adult dialogue with social media companies about the protests. Two men have already been arrested for their criminal and inciting messages.

Daisley thinks Musk can force his angry tweets to the top of our timelines (the solution is not to use the “For You” tab…), but the will of a democratically elected government should mean more than the wrath of a tech oligarch, even when it comes to Musk…
