Michael Keaton Discusses Beetlejuice’s ‘Politically Correct’ Persona in Upcoming Sequel

MOVIE NEWS – Michael Keaton is set to reprise his iconic role in the long-anticipated sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. With the film’s release drawing near, many are curious whether the mischievous ghost will undergo any changes to fit into today’s more politically aware society. Keaton recently shed light on this topic in an interview with GQ, addressing whether the character would be “politically correct.”

“As far as Beetlejuice goes, there wasn’t much to adjust. The character, who was a chaotic force in 1988, remains just as chaotic in today’s more ‘woke’ world.”

“Beetlejuice isn’t exactly human; he’s more of a thing—more of an ‘it’ than a ‘he’ or ‘she’. And when I say ‘it’, I don’t mean that in a politically correct way. I see Beetlejuice as a force of nature, something wild and untamed. Sure, there’s a strong male energy there, a kind of goofy masculinity that I find fun. But it’s not something that would evolve just because the times have changed.”

Keaton reassures fans that Beetlejuice will remain true to his original form when the sequel hits theaters next month, promising that the character will be as much of a “chaotic force” as ever, likely bringing relief to longtime fans.

Beetlejuice’s Limited Role in the Sequel, Says Michael Keaton

While Beetlejuice’s mischievous nature remains intact, Keaton also revealed that, similar to the original film, the character won’t dominate the screen. In the first movie, Beetlejuice appeared for just about 17 minutes, and Keaton suggests the sequel will follow suit, with the character playing a supporting role rather than driving the plot.

“The concept was, no, no, no—you can’t overload it with Beetlejuice. That would ruin the balance. I think Beetlejuice is more integrated into the storyline this time, rather than steering the narrative as much as he did in the original. He’s more a part of the ensemble this time around.”

Directed by Tim Burton, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will see Michael Keaton return as the titular character, with a cast that includes Jenna Ortega, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, and Willem Dafoe, promising another wild journey through the Netherworld.

“Beetlejuice is back! Following an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return to their home in Winter River. Still tormented by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s world is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, stumbles upon the mysterious model of the town in the attic, inadvertently opening the portal to the Afterlife. With chaos looming in both worlds, it’s only a matter of time before someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times, bringing the mischievous demon back to wreak his unique brand of havoc.”
