CD Projekt RED will modernize The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with a free remaster update on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 29. The comeback will be crowned by the 2027 expansion Songs of the Past, billed as Geralt’s final standalone adventure and set in an entirely new region.

The Polish studio unveiled the long-rumored overhaul during gamescom Opening Night Live. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered is much more than a resolution boost, promising upgraded HDR, ray tracing, global illumination, new character shaders, and support for the latest versions of DLSS and FSR.

The developers are also revisiting the way the game plays. Movement on foot and horseback is being reworked, larger monsters will receive improved attack patterns, and the loot and meditation systems will be updated alongside transmogrification, new finishers, and modernized combat.

The skill tree is becoming clearer, photo mode is expanding, and hair physics for Geralt and the wider cast are being improved. PlayStation 5 Pro will receive dedicated support, while the PC release will add native DirectX 12 and current upscaling technologies to balance image quality and performance.

The remaster launches on September 29 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with existing owners receiving the upgrade for free on eligible platforms. A native Nintendo Switch 2 version will arrive on the same day, while the PC ecosystem will also expand to Battle.net.

The biggest surprise, however, is Songs of the Past, a paid expansion due in 2027 that puts players back in Geralt’s boots. Its story takes place in Letten, an apparently idyllic land hiding a dark secret, and introduces a chain-like weapon as the fate of one of the witcher’s closest friendships hangs in the balance.

CD Projekt RED is developing the expansion with Fool’s Theory, whose team includes veterans of the original game. The return is made even more generous by the fact that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are now available to every owner of the base game at no additional cost.
