Jack Tretton Leaves SCEA Admits that He Made Lots of Mistakes with the PS3

Sometimes you got to admit, you had it all wrong. Jack Tretton and Sony itself made a lot of mistakes with the PS3, which they sold at a massive loss for so long that it almost bankrupt the whole company. With the PlayStation 4, success is back in the games division, which is now almost the brightest part of the company.

And according to outgoing Sony executive Jack Tretton, the success of the PlayStation 4 was a “redemption” not just for Sony, but for his own career. The reason Tretton is retiring now is that he wants to go out on top, as he told GamesIndustry.biz.

Tretton said in the interview:

“The most challenging time I think was establishing PlayStation 3 and establishing Blu-ray technology and the financial challenges that went along with the PS3. But that’s where PlayStation 4 was such a great redemption. Figuring everything out and making that platform such a success quite frankly contributed to me being more comfortable with getting on to the rest of my career”.

Jack Tretton will be moving on with his career, but will stay in the games industry, where he will work as an independent consultant. Tretton has done a great job with the PlayStation 4, seemingly making all the right decisions with the console. Shawn Layden will take Jack’s place as head of SCEA.
