Game of Thrones Ep. 6: The Ice Dragon – Let’s wrap this up!

REVIEW – Perhaps I won’t spoil much by saying that the Forrester name isn’t a grant for survival in Telltale’s rendition of the well-known series  – to put it mildly. During the past five episodes of the Telltale series many of the main characters of the family died a horrible death and only some of them could be saved thanks to your intervention. You won’t be surprised that won’t be different in the final episode either.

Have you spoken well during prior events with every major character? Chosen wisely concerning every dilemma? Fought well? Nice! It won’t necessarily mean that you will survive the final chapter with every remaining primary character, but at least you’ll have the chance to do so. Nevertheless: the last chapter will be the cruelest of them all.

Family matters

Apparently, the last chapter six picks up from where we last left the Forrester family. Still, instead of starting with some major event, we’re slowly eased into The Ice Dragon with a revelation as Gared and his companions beyond the wall finally reach The North Grove.

We won’t spoil you with any significant details, but here they’ll encounter a new scenario that plays out over the course of the episode before tying back into the over-arching plot. Although peripheral, it’s an interesting subplot that sheds light on some lesser-known lore aspects that fans of the show and novels will come to appreciate.

The character development of Gared is also at its peak. Some of the choices may alter his

Keep your head on!

Like in past episodes, in the final chapter the major problem for the family members of the House of Forrester will be just to survive. The valuable Ironwood is still the primary source that is wanted by their enemies. Thus, the doom of the Forrester family seems almost inevitable.

For some of them it means just playing their cards right, like Mira Forrester, who is still deep in the dark complots of King’s Landing. Some past choices may have grave consequences for Mira – perhaps even more so, than for other (stronger) members of the family.  It may also save her skin, so of you made some important allies or foes, it may have an importance right now for our scheming Forrester girl.

Two brothers

If there’s one area I feel this episode (and the whole first season for that matter) really excelled at, that was the weight of that the meaningful choices I made. They were not only considered important, but the lives of the main characters depended on it. Many of those decisions will no doubt impact the second season when it comes out – regarding the survivors, that is.

The final chapter is also the most brutal, where one of the two brothers will show its brute strength against their enemies. Your decisions, of course, will impact the outcome of the combat, but some fierce fight is to be expected in either case.

It’s just a goodbye, not a farewell

One final thing that was also truly excellent is how the final summary of my choices was handled. It really brought to light the impact of some of my major decisions, and while the story (especially regarding the fate of some of the characters) has left me feeling somewhat shocked at the end, the choice summation here was outstanding.

So after this well done Season 1 we will just have to wait for the second one. Let’s hope it won’t take long…

Pro:

+ Plenty of action
+ Cersei Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen are in it
+ Asher is a fully fledged character now

Against:

– Annoying ending
– Quality and varation of facial expressions could be better
– Too short!
