Bungie started working on something new under Activision after spending most of the noughties on Halo games. The contract was signed in 2010, and it was revealed in 2012. Destiny launched in the autumn of 2014 – only on consoles, though! -, and since the game’s release, there’s now over twenty million players. However, it looks like there’s going to be a change in plans for the future of this franchise.
The contract specifically mentions Destiny 2, 3 and 4 – this plan may have to be left behind. (Unless Acti decides to pull a Tony Hawk on Bungie, rushing the devs to get the games out before the license ends.) The change is the following: for 2016, Bungie plans to release regularly new DLCs for Destiny, while Destiny 2 was supposed to be done by late 2016-mid 2017. It might be out in 2017, though.
Maybe the odd years will keep getting major expansions like The Taken King and even years – except 2016? – can get the numbered Destiny titles. For the spring, Bungie promised an expansion even bigger than The Taken King.
Let’s hope they don’t have to rush because of deadlines.
