Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare – The Kevin Smith Talk

PREVIEW – San Diego Comic Con has ended, and luckily for us, we got a deeper look into Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. On the IMDBoat, Kevin Smith sat down with Brian Bloom, Jamie Gray Hyder, Jeff Negus and with Brian Horton to discuss the process of making the game.

The game has been in development for nearly three years, and Infinity Ward has had a chance to introduce their newest game to the Call Of Duty franchise which is not a sequel to Ghosts. Instead, they decided to steer their entry into full-blown sci-fi. The series with its trademark movie likeness has now been fully embraced with the help of such people as Brian Bloom (Screenwriter and voice actor), and Kit Harrington from Game of Thrones fame.

The game does seem to have a bit more of a Hollywood – Michael Bay atmosphere to it, as Jeff Negus, has said that the entire game was shot in a movie like way. It is dubbed as an interactive movie, and the player is the cinematographer at the same time. The player can interact with characters on the Retribution whenever he feels like it, and not as per the scripted event.

Virtual Space War

Though it was way harder for Jeff Negus to be on set here, as technically there was no set.

“The thing is, we come in with a virtual set. And we build little touch points into the motion capture stage. So you touch a wall, and it’s not really a wall, it’s some speed-rail piping. So you touch the speed-rail and in the game we apply the motion capture data to their models [and] put them into the volume and I’m actually able to see on the set, on the day, to be able to see them inside the game. So it allows me to just kind of walk around as a cameraman inside the virtual world. And from there I just kind of go back to the office and we create a bunch of animated cameras based off of those.”

Footage showing the actors and actresses have been shown, as they are in MoCap suits reciting lines. The marketing is on the actors, rather than a dog (Ala Ghosts). However, it does seem like less of a marketing gimmick than an actual effort this time around. Jeff Negus recounted during the interview how they learned and trained with Navy Seals to get the feel of clearing rooms, using weapons, and firing weapons.

An infinite game?

Kevin Smith aptly asked if the game has ending since it is titled Infinite Warfare to which the cast replied: Yes there is a definite end, but there are a lot of side missions in the game, and a decision can be made when piloting the retribution. As Brian Bloom said, most of the times we were just rookies, greens, and generally a role in the franchise where we had to follow everyone’s orders. Not this time, though, after the first mission, learning that both Captain and the EXO have died, we are promoted to Captain. We must provide time, and defence to Earth until they rebuilt their fleet after the deadly attack by the Settlement Defence Front.

The ship is called the UNSA Retribution, armed to teeth with latest weapons and fighters, and is the only thing standing between Earth and the SEF. The ship is modeled after real life aircraft carriers, but not just regarding the interior, but even the life on the ship is reminiscent of a real life battleship. We can interact with the environment and characters; everyone will be an integral part of the ship. We can take side-missions to gain upgrades to our weapons and ships so that we can be more effective.

You know nothing… uhm… Saleon Kotch

The main villain of the game called Saleon Kotch is voiced by Game of Thrones star Kit „Jon Snow” Harington, who decided to break the pace between the SDF and Earth, and launched a full scale invasion against Earth and its colonies.
With this new information in hand Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare looks more exciting than ever, with the reveal of the ship, and the method the game was worked on. It seems to be shaping up to be a real sci-fi epic.

We will still have to wait for that multiplayer reveal which should be in September of 2016, and there has been no word on how the zombies will fit into this game.

As soon as new information hits we will be there to cover it.

Could be awesome:

+ SPACE WARS!
+ Finally, not a rookie, get to choose missions
+ Looks varied, and new with full sci-fi influence

Could be bad:

– Zombies? Again.. ugh
– Graphics did not get big of an upgrade
– Will it have space combat only MP?
