Previously, we wrote about how Battle.net might be a victim of a DDOS attack in early August. It happened!
Overwatch, which just received its first seasonal event, the Lucio Ball as part of Summer Games, wasn’t playable in the evening hours in the United States (or in the early hours of today, in case you’re from Europe). Lucio Ball is similar to Rocket League, as players in a 3v3 format can play a football game against each other. Blizzard‘s first update on the DDOS attack was the following tweet:
We are currently monitoring a DDOS attack against network providers which is affecting latency/connections to our games.

PoodleCorp immediately took responsibility for the attack, and they demanded that one of their affiliates receive ten thousand followers on Twitter, or they will keep attacking Blizzard. (The ransom tweet was deleted since then, plus this account, called Gh0stPoodle has only 3321 followers…)

Overnight, the servers started to work as normal, although for a while, the Battle.net forums were unaccessible. Blizzard confirmed the restoration of the servers.
The DDoS attacks from earlier have ended and players can now log into BattleNet. We are investigating reports of World Server Down in WoW.

Everything is functional… for now. Until then, a video about the Summer Games event.
