The new Quake will likely split the crowd, which could be a bad decision altogether.
Bethesda confirmed that Quake Champions is going to be a free-to-play title, and Tim Willits, the creative director, explained the decision to Polygon. They want to have more players. However, there’s a downside to this game model…
If you don’t pay for the game, you can only play as the protagonist of the first game, Ranger. The other characters will only be available via the purchase of the Champion Pack. Therefore, Willits can say that paying and f2p players will have a fair shake at victory, utilizing something like the Favor might not be working in their favor (pardon the pun). The Favor is the in-game currency, which you can spend on trying out the other characters for a limited (and currently unknown) time. You can also spend it on backpacks to access rune challenges, and if you complete them, you get a container (or let’s call it what it is… a loot box) to unlock more characters and skins. So… is Bethesda turning Quake into Overwatch?
We end this article with two videos. One shows the Blood Covenant map; the other one concentrates on Nyx.
