Sony: Success Here, Losses There

Sony‘s financial results aren’t rosy at the moment…

Sure, the Japanese company has managed to ship sixty million PlayStation 4s, which is a decent result, but Deadline reports that one of Sony’s companies have lost a lot of money: Sony Pictures, Sony’s movie subsidiary, has lost 719 million dollars (!!!), which is a significant drop from the 346 million dollar profit from the year before – however, it was expected to happen. Sony Pictures’ nine-month results saw a $913M loss in the Pictures division, largely related to a $962M impairment charge of goodwill, which was included in Sony’s full year figures. It said it expected the division to return to profit after the write-down. (They have a point: from -962, they improved to -719.)

The loss also affected Sony’s overall profit, which was about 50 (!) percent less than a year before – only 655 million dollars, although Sony predicts a massive surge to 4.5 billion in the just started financial year.
