Epic Games’s Aggressive Expansion Continues Even Further!

More and more games are getting timed exclusivity deal on Epic Games Store, Tim Sweeney‘s (head of Epic Games) digital storefront that started in December.

The Outer Worlds (although it will be on the Microsoft Store as well), Control, Anno 1800, or Borderlands 3 (which got several new details revealed, including its release date or the name of the Vault Hunters) – just a few games that will be first available on the Epic Games Store on PC. Anno 1800’s case has repeated what Metro: Exodus has done – the pre-orders have started on Steam, but BAM, it isn’t going to launch there first but on the EGS!

Sweeney was asked about it on Twitter, and he responded: „We’ve had a lot of discussions about this since GDC. Epic is open to continuing to sign funding/exclusivity deals with willing developers and publishers regardless of their previous plans or announcements around Steam.”

Notice how he even used the word funding – is he basically bribing developers? Otherwise, why would that word be there? Sweeney wrote something else after it: „This prompted further discussions at Epic, leading to the realization that these calls must be up to developers and publishers, and Epic wouldn’t tell them “no” on account of existing statements made about Steam.” In other words, he would not say no to those devs or publishers who decide to abandon Steam in favour of Epic, meaning Metro: Exodus’ or Anno 1800’s example might repeat.

Steve Allison, the head of Epic Games Store, told PCGamer in March that they „don’t want to do that ever again,” hinting at Metro: Exodus’ sudden change of stores. Sweeney has reacted to it with his second tweet. Allison also said that they have been in talks with Deep Silver for months before the jump, and the issue was the late change of plans. „Now we’re live and we have a view out in time, and we can work with everybody […] We have a case study where it says ‘maybe we should make our decisions earlier,’ and we will,” Allison said.

So Epic’s bubble continues to grow, but if the Fortnite money runs out (which could happen if the battle royale fed is ending), they won’t have money to expand as they do nowadays…
