Scalebound’s Cancellation Wasn’t Entirely Microsoft’s Fault!

Atsushi Inaba, the head of PlatinumGames, admitted that Scalebound, which was to be released on Xbox One and Windows 10, directed by Hideki Kamiya (Resident Evil 2, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101…), wasn’t cancelled purely due to the Redmond-based company!

Inaba told VGC the following about Scalebound, which got cancelled in January 2017: „Watching fans getting angry at Microsoft over the cancellation wasn’t easy for us to watch. Because the reality is, when any game in development can’t get released it’s because both sides failed. I think there are areas where we could’ve done better and I’m sure there are areas that Microsoft as a publishing partner wish that they could’ve done better. Because nobody wants a game to be cancelled.” So he says the game was cancelled due to both Microsoft and PlatinumGames! (And this game could have helped the Xbox One to sell more than in just three digits each week in Japan, as PlatinumGames is a Japanese developer studio…)

Inaba also talked about the previous rumours (which we also discussed), claiming that Scalebound could be a game on the Nintendo Switch – he says that there are no such plans in PlatinumGames. Scalebound‘s IP (intellectual property) is owned by Microsoft, meaning there’s not much chance of the game getting revived, unless MS starts to make games for other platforms than the Xbox and PC. However, Microsoft is not SEGA… so we don’t see them making games for the Nintendo Switch…

Scalebound‘s concept was partially used in another game, which is supervised by Hideki Kamiya: the Nintendo Switch-exclusive Astral Chain has taken some cues from the cancelled game. This title will launch in late August – we have previously revealed Nintendo’s plans for their exclusive games for this year.
