Andrew Wilson, the CEO of Electronic Arts, answered the question that is also affecting this year’s FIFA 20 (as they won’t release a new proper version this year but a Legacy Edition on the Nintendo Switch, meaning nothing more than a minor repaint of FIFA 19…)
Not a lot of games are available from Electronic Arts on Nintendo’s nearly 2.5-years-old platform – aside from FIFA titles, only two games, namely Unravel Two and Fe, come to our mind. Two indie games. That’s not a lot. Thus, no wonder an investor asked during the company’s earnings call (where they revealed their first fiscal quarter year’s results) whether they could bring The Sims to the Switch.
„Any time we’re evaluating platform conversations we’re really looking at a couple of things. One, does the game really fit the profile of that platform in terms of the control or the community ecosystem? Two, do we think the community playing on that platform would appreciate the game and go there, or would they prefer to play it somewhere else? We have a lot of data that would suggest a great many Switch owners also own a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One or a PC and very often choose to play the games that we make on those platforms, even though they have a Switch and they enjoy a lot of great content on the Switch,” Wilson answered, not clarifying this data he mentioned.
In short, he said they look how well they can monetize the game (remember which publisher we’re discussing here…), and if people rather play the same game on other platforms. This explains why the next FIFA game on the Switch will not be new (VOLTA, which effectively brings FIFA Street elements into FIFA 20, will be a new addition on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC), and thus, they don’t plan to bring new games over to the Switch, even though the platform sells well.
So don’t even think about say, Mass Effect Trilogy on the Nintendo Switch (and let us not talk about Andromeda).
