The Battle Royale Game With 1000 Players Has Been Canceled!

Mavericks: Proving Grounds battle royale game, where a thousand players could have duked it out for the victory, is not going to be completed.

UK-based Automaton Games‘ website has the following quote: „Please be advised that due to insufficient funding, the development of the Mavericks: Proving Grounds game has now ceased.” In short, Automaton Games has gone bankrupt, which is a significant surprise, especially how they reached a key milestone in development last week by announcing the Alpha version. Also, the game was playable at E3 in June! The sad thing here is that the plans about a public beta in November are also off the table entirely.

The game would have used the cloud-based, promising SpatialOS technology and its tools to allow a thousand players to be on the map. (Previously, when the game had no official name and was called Project X, only 400 players was the limit – has the technology improved since…?) Was Maverick: Proving Grounds too early? A few years later, we’re likely going to see something similar, so it’s possible that Automaton Games was in the right place at the wrong time (or not – this sudden financial turn is too weird, though).

Meanwhile, there’s another game that we need to mention. Previously, Automaton Games has released a free-to-play, asymmetric FPS called Deceit, which you can find on Steam here. The administrators do not plan to pull it off Steam as they are working on a new licensing deal to keep the game up and running. The mostly positively rated game is not in grave danger, so it’s not going to be immediately cancelled and shut down.

So in short: Mavericks: Proving Grounds battle royale game – game over, Deceit: continue. The former game had no coins to continue.
