PlayStation 5 Backwards Compatibility: Did Microsoft Corner Sony?

It seems Sony has quickly changed its opinion on PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility.

When we mentioned backwards compatibility when we recapped the PlayStation 5’s technical presentation, we only heard that the top 100 playtime PlayStation 4 games would be supported on the PS5 at launch. PS1, PS2? Not even mentioned. It felt week, and Sony Interactive Entertainment had to react – and they have done so by updating the PlayStation Blog post.

„With all of the amazing games in PlayStation 4’s catalogue, we’ve devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favourites on PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility. We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000-plus PlayStation 4 titles will be playable on PlayStation 5. We’re expecting backwards compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PlayStation 5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers.

In his presentation, Mark Cerny provided a snapshot into the top 100 most-played PlayStation 4 titles, demonstrating how well our backward compatibility efforts are going. We have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as we move toward launch. We will provide updates on backward compatibility, along with much more PlayStation 5 news, in the months ahead. Stay tuned!”, Hideaki Nishino, Sony Interactive Entertainment platform planning and management senior vice president, wrote.

Microsoft has already taken this opportunity to respond – „Bring your favourite games with you to Xbox Series X! Simply connect your existing external USB hard drive to Xbox Series X and your entire library is instantly accessible,” they said on Twitter. There was another, now-deleted tweet, in which Xbox said that all currently backwards compatible (Xbox 360, original Xbox) games, as well as Xbox One titles, will be running on the Xbox Series X, which would thus cover four generations and not two without any streaming/remastering involved.

Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X is planned to arrive this Holiday season.
