Shinji Mikami Wanted To Make An Unusual Genre Game

The director of the Resident Evil game wanted to do something else, but the success changed plans…

In the mid-90s, Capcom pulled big results with Biohazard, which was known as Resident Evil in the West. It was directed by Shinji Mikami, who told IGN in an interview what he would have done if Resident Evil flopped. The answer is surprising: he wanted to do an action game that felt like a film, and as an example, he brought up Die Hard. Just imagine a Die Hard-like action game, directed by Mikami at Capcom…

After Resident Evil was completed, Mikami pitched this idea to Capcom, but the Japanese company had other plans: they prioritized a sequel (which was then directed by Hideki Kamiya, although he had to restart the development once…). Regarding Resident Evil 2 Remake, Mikami said he saw a video of it and he thought it looked good. He believes Capcom will approve of more remakes simply due to them selling well. (Resident Evil 2 Remake sold well, too.) He approves of Resident Evil 4‘s possible remake, „as long as it turns out good.” (We wrote about rumours of M-Two, formed by former PlatinumGames members, leading its development, after being a support team on it in Resident Evil 3 Remake.)

Mikami also says that it’s harder to scare players in the horror genre than ever before. He also said this as early as 2013. The zombie themes, according to him, have been overdone, losing their „sense of threat” in the process. „You reach a point where things become like Zombieland, it just becomes a comedy. It might be scary at first but when you’re playing a game, it becomes so repetitive and the player is encountering a zombie so often that no matter how fast they move, they stop feeling like a threat,” Mikami says. He also confirmed that GhostWire: Tokyo has become the game he worked on the longest period. It’s being made by Tango Gameworks.

He did end up making action games, though (director of P.N.03, God Hand, and Vanquish).
