The French company sees a key leader leave every week at this point, and it starts to become incredible.
Carve another name on the list of people that left the company in one way or another: Andrée Cossette has spent 22 years at Ubisoft, and she was the managing director of Ubisoft Quebec. On LinkedIn, she explained in French why she decided to leave, but Gamesindustry has translated the gist of it to English. She says her decision „is the result of a long reflection and is not related to the current situation within the Ubisoft Group.” However, the timing feels a little suspicious. A week ago, we heard that within Ubisoft Quebec, the developers were forced to scale back playable female characters, such as Evie and Kassandra (the latter of which was in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, keep this in mind for later), because „women don’t sell games.” (That’s essentially what Serge Hascoët said. He left the company due to sexual misconduct before.)
On Twitter, Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo has also shared a statement from Ubisoft, which backs up Cossette’s statement: „Andrée Cossette’s departure was a personal decision, carefully considered and taken long before current events and in no way associated with the allegations of inappropriate behaviour involving certain employees. For the past 22 years, Andrée has been a pillar in the implementation of Ubisoft in Canada, first in Montreal, then in Quebec, where she helped found the studio that now shines internationally. We would like to thank her for her commitment and contribution to the development of Ubisoft. We wish her the best in her future endeavours. The current management team will act in the interim to ensure a proper transition.”
Let’s hope that Cossette is indeed not affected in the scandal that has been running circles around the French company for weeks. Still, we wish her the best – without her, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla would likely not exist in its current form (as it is mainly developed by Ubisoft Montreal), or we could also mention Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey or Gods & Monsters (which are Ubisoft Quebec’s titles).
