After a successful charity drive, Bethesda is making the first three episodes of Quake free.
As Quake III: Arena is over three years old, it’s something that any functional PC can run nowadays. It was one of the most used games on LAN parties, along with Unreal Tournament.
Bethesda writes that there are more than twenty thousand dollars in donations, which means the first three Quake games are now available for free via the Bethesda.net launcher. (The second one had a target of ten thousand dollars.) In case you missed the game somehow, you can now acquire it for free. With this move, QuakeCon at Home did manage to put the Quake IP into the spotlight, after having only a single event that was directly related to id Software’s iconic series during the event.
Speaking of Bethesda, there’s still plenty of room to mention another game. Fallout 76 wasn’t as much of a success that Bethesda and Todd Howard hoped for. (Perhaps this is why they introduced a subscription system, Fallout 1st for it…?) But the game, which is almost two years old now, still lacks something. It has no mod support, even though the devs promised it before. During one of the QuakeCon at Home panels, Jeff Gardiner, the project lead of Fallout 76, said the following: „We are still working on mod support, it’s coming. We call it the heavy lift, meaning we’ve had to put a lot of resources into that… it’s not just drag-and-drop from the previous games because of the way our client-server architecture works. But it is coming, we’re working on it… just stay tuned.”
At this rate, we wouldn’t be surprised if Fallout 76 is going to receive this function when Starfield, the team’s next big game, is launching. However, that might be wishful thinking on our end.
