The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum: Daedalic’s Game Goes Cross-Gen [VIDEO]

More platforms than the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X (plus the Xbox Series S?), and the PC will receive Gollum’s adventures.

During Future Games Show: Gamescom 2020 Edition, Daedalic Entertainment announced that the iconic character of The Lord of the Rings will be also available on the currently available consoles, meaning there will be a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and a Nintendo Switch port, too. It means the German devs might not fully use the skillset of the next-gen hardware (and we have heard that current-gen machines hold back the development of the next-gen titles), or that they have been planning as such all along, and this was their surprise.

„The game mixes stealth with vertical climbing parkour. If you want a reference you might think of it as similar to Prince of Persia. It is mostly a non-combat game, but Gollum will be able to stealthily take out enemies. However, this will not be easy and always come with big risks. We want players to carefully weigh these encounters. After all, Gollum’s strengths lie in cunning not combat,” lead designer Martin Wilkes told IGN.

Tilman Schanen, the lead narrative designer, added that Gollum won’t use weapons, but he can distract enemies with throwable items. The abilities of „special allies” (familiar characters that will mostly play smaller roles, but a few of them will be quite significant), and the environment can help him. In the decision making, we’ll choose from either Gollum’s Smeagol or Gollum personality. Schanen says that the decisions will change how the game feels, and the dominant personality can influence „animations, soundscapes, certain gameplay situations, and in-game dialogue.”

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will launch late next year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X (Xbox Series S?), PC. Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The first video is the teaser, and the second one is the Future Games Show presentation-
