If Square Enix doesn’t want to expand on the Nintendo Switch, then we’ll get something else instead.
Famitsu interviewed Tetsuya Nomura, the director of the Kingdom Hearts series (who is probably more focused on Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2, as the first episode didn’t even get close to the end of the story). „I want to ask about the future of the series. The “Dark Seeker” story ended with Kingdom Hearts III, but not every mystery has come to light and the secret movie suggests there are still new developments to come. What does the future of the Kingdom Hearts series look like?”, Famitsu asked.
„Kingdom Hearts will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2022, you know. I’m working hard towards the 20th anniversary. I have already switched to thinking about the next work, and the Kingdom Hearts team has already started working on something new. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory came just before we started working on the next title, so the main staff was able to assist. When we’re able to announce something in the future, I think it will be full of surprises, so please look forward to it,” Nomura replied.
He also told Nintendo Enthusiast that even though Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, the rhythm game, will launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch (on November 13 in the West), they don’t have any plans to port other games to the platform. Square Enix was considering it, but they found the porting technologically difficult. (Seriously? The first two games came out on the PS2…) He also added that this does not rule out the possibility of future non-Kingdom Hearts titles by him appearing on Switch.
We’d bet money on the next announcement being a next-gen now-we-include-everything compilation on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. After all, the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 got something similar.
