31st Union Is Working On An Overwatch Rival For Take-Two

An ex-Blizzard guy helms the studio under another publisher – 31st Union is developing a multiplayer, character-centric action title.

MauroNL3 recapped on Twitter what we can know so far from the game that will be published by Take-Two (or its sublabel, 2K): „The studio was formed in 2019 and is led by Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey and Overwatch narrative lead Michael Shu. The studio operates across two locations in California and Spain and currently has over 30 positions available for hire. Going through these various listings reveals the game is a multi-platform AAA title being developed using Unreal Engine 4.

The game seems to be a „multiplayer character-action game” as is mentioned specifically in the Senior Software Engineer listing. This is echoed throughout other listings with experience in „action, shooters or MP titles” being a requirement. Another listing describes „Come and help us build the future of Multiplayer Action games!” This is all set in „a rich and stunning world filled with diverse characters and large-scale high population 3d environments.” These characters are „diverse and innovative” and „will be loved by players for years to come.” Applicants are needed to help „texture weapons, vehicles, and mechanical objects of all kinds” as well as „cutscenes and other cinematics” and „emotionally compelling & technically sophisticated audio.” Visual storytelling is also mentioned frequently.

The studio also houses several ex-Sledgehammer and Visceral Games developers. Condrey is committed to establishing the culture of this studio on its founding, calling it a „clean canvas” and stressed the importance of diversity in the creative process,” the analyst wrote.

So they are effectively doing an Overwatch competitor, which is likely 1.5-2 years away from completion. Since it’s multiplatform, the game – which has no name yet – is going to be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
