Xbox boss Phil Spencer stands in solidarity with victims of abuse allegations against Activision Blizzard

Phil Spencer offers “personal support” to anyone who has suffered sexual harassment or discrimination.

On 20 July, the state of California sued Activision Blizzard for alleged sexual harassment, abuse and discrimination against the company’s female employees. The news fell like a bombshell in the video game industry, causing Blizzard workers to revolt and Ubisoft employees to restart their fight in the wake of its shockwave. And it has also sparked solidarity from fellow professionals across the industry. A list of people that includes Phil Spencer, head of Xbox.

Through his official Twitter profile, the Xbox “boss” has not hesitated to take the side of the victims to show his support, just days after these accusations against Activision Blizzard became known. “I’ve just come out of an empowering meeting with Xbox Women in Gaming,” the collective of female Xbox workers, “from whom I’ve learned so much over the years. I want to offer my personal support to anyone who has experienced sexual harassment or discrimination. I see you. I stand with you.

His latest words leave no room for doubt – “I’m with you” – especially as they come on the heels of this new wave of accusations within the gaming industry. After the lawsuit against Activision Blizzard became known, the World of Warcraft company responded by first denying the allegations, and then acknowledging in a second statement that they need to improve as a company. However, this response did not in the least convince its employees, who have vowed to continue the fight against the company.

On the side of Ubisoft, another of the companies singled out in the last week, its president Yves Guillemot contradicted the version of his employees in a statement in which he claimed to have taken real measures against harassment in the last year. Words that were branded as “hypocritical” by his employees, who claim that the company still harbours harassers. It is worth noting that Phil Spencer – and with him, Xbox – is not the only big name to stand up for victims. Bungie, makers of Halo, have also been vocal in their rejection of the industry’s bullying culture.
