With no word on a new instalment of the veteran Castlevania for years, many thought the game had been cancelled for good. But now it’s back!
Konami has announced the return of its classic series as Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls, a new iOS title. The new protagonist, Arika, is a member of a secret government organisation dedicated to fighting Dracula, who must face the return of the resurrected vampire. The story is based on this classic premise, and the traditional mechanics of the game are exploration and boss fights, which can be played cooperatively!
During the presentation, the game’s developers confirmed that the game has a strong narrative and that, alongside Arika, iconic characters from the Castlevania saga such as Alucard, Simon Belmont, Charlotte, Shanoa and Marie will be available, as well as new characters such as Lucy, a researcher. She will accompany Arika in the fight against the resurrection of evil.
After its 2018 launch, Konami returned a year later during Tokyo Game Show 2019 to reveal more information about the title, accompanied by a new trailer. While the game promised a classic 2D action-platformer approach to the series, coupled with a brand new multiplayer co-op system, that promise fizzled out like Dracula himself, and we never heard anything more about it – until now.
Like The Count, Konami’s title looks set to be resurrected, with promises that it will arrive exclusively on Apple Arcade‘s subscription service “soon”. The game will be available for iOS, tvOS and Mac. Konami has made all the information available to players on its website. It seems Konami is on the move with the series, and to the return of the iOS game, we must add the possible arrival of the Castlevania Advance Collection.
