Breath-traps against mosquitoes

TECH NEWS – Researchers have installed more than 300 mosquito traps in the French town of Hyères after the insects caused severe damage to local tourism. Take a deep breath; it’s going to suck, just not for everyone!

Machines from a company called Qista have an unusual way of trapping mosquitoes: by mimicking human breathing. The method exploits one of the insect’s most characteristic traits, the fact that it can most easily find its victims by the carbon dioxide they emit.

According to Qista, the devices reduce the incidence of mosquitoes by around 80%. BBC Click’s Chris Fox visited Hyères to see the machines in action and ask its co-founders about their impact on the environment.
