Fantastic Metroid Dread trailer: new bosses, abilities and weapons!

Nintendo has unveiled a new overview trailer for the upcoming Metroid Dread, giving fans a taste of what to expect from the game, which launches next month. We loved every bit of it!

Intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran finally returns to the gaming world in Metroid Dread. Fans of the series have had to wait 11 years for a new mainline game and even longer for this particular title, which was first rumoured to be arriving in 2002.

With less than a month to go until release, fans won’t have to wait much longer, and Nintendo is doing its best to entice pre-orderers with an excellent review trailer. The latest video recently released on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel shows new abilities, weapons and bosses, and some old classics.

The video game series has coined the term “Metroidvania” with a maze-style map where Samus must explore and upgrade his equipment to discover new paths in the world. Skills shown in the trailer include the Spider Magnet, which allows players to climb particular walls; the Flash Shift dash mode, which will enable players to get through large gaps, the Storm Missile, which will enable players to target multiple enemies at once, and of course the Morph Ball, which allows players to get through narrow passages.

Other unnamed abilities are also shown in the trailer, such as the ability to scan the area for hidden passages, a tractor beam to pull objects, and a charge that allows Samus to break through certain obstacles. The trailer also introduces a new crawling technique and some combat options, including Samus’ cannon and missiles, as well as a counter-manoeuvre to fend off enemy attacks.

The long-awaited 2D Metroid 5 is coming to Nintendo Switch this autumn.

Many of the skills gained during the journey will also have combat utility, allowing players to refine enemy encounters further. And another staple of the genre, many boss fights look like the skill players will need to master to progress. Fans will also get their most profound insight into the new enemy type that gives the game its name, the E.M.M.I. The relentless quadrupeds hunt Samus through particular sections of the map and are seemingly invincible. However, the trailer seems to hint that there will be a way to defeat E.M.M.I. later in the game. Until then, however, the E.M.M.I. will kill Samus with a single hit, leaving the only options to escape or hide.

This is also where it was revealed that there would be different types of E.M.M.I.’s with different abilities, so what works for one may not work for another, so players should be on their guard. Finally, fans were given a glimpse into some boss battles and hints about what to expect in the story. The most notable of these is the appearance of Kraid, who dramatically helps close the trailer. Kraid is Samus’ recurring adversary from the original Metroid. Fans of Super Smash Bros. will also be able to spot the mighty behemoth from the Brinstar Depths stage.

The story finally brings the original Metroid saga to a close, which ended abruptly with Metroid Fusion in 2002. Metroid Dread was initially planned as a sequel and has since been tried and shelved several times due to technological limitations that prevented E.M.M.I. from being developed as the creative team wished.

The story will pick up immediately after the events of Metroid Fusion, with a new planet for Samus to explore and long-awaited answers to the bounty hunter’s origins for fans. Nintendo has also confirmed that the game will offer a concise but detailed recap of the events of the first four games as an opening, so it will still be helpful as a warm-up for new fans.

Metroid Dread has already received a lot of pre-orders on Amazon in the U.S., U.K. and Japan. The game will arrive exclusively for Nintendo Switch on October 8 and will also be available as a bundle with the new OLED Switch model launching the same day.
