The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn says he doesn’t want Joker in his movies, and he would rather give unknown charcters a shot.
After 2016 Suicide Squad movie’s flop at the box office and bad reviews, no one would have thought that in 5 years, there will be a new movie based on the group. But then Disney fired Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn was recruited by Warner Bros. and gave him a free hand to make any DC movie he wanted to. Surprisingly, Gunn decided to take a crack at a Suicide Squad movie even after the result of the 2016 adaptation. With a huge budget and an R-rating Gunn managed to get the essence of the crew, and spin-off stories are on the way.
Several characters returned from the 2016 film to The Suicide Squad, but the two most famous ones were missing. Will Smith couldn’t play Deadshot due to scheduling, and the Joker was left out of the film entirely by choice. Although fans wanted to see a new installation of the Joker, James Gunn never had the intention of using the character in The Suicide Squad. As he told The New York Times, “I just don’t know why Joker would be in the Suicide Squad. He wouldn’t be helpful in that type of war situation.”
In a recent interview with Desde Hollywood, the director said he likes to work with oddballs and unfamiliar characters. Gunn was asked if he’d make a Joker film or something similar to Todd Phillips’ grounded and gritty version. “There’s all sorts of other characters I’m interested in doing. Joker isn’t really one of them. He’s been done well so many times by so many people. I am much more interested in taking characters who haven’t fully had their shot, or people who I feel [connected to]. For whatever reason, I feel connected to Harley Quinn. I feel she’s one of the easiest characters I’ve ever written. So I’m interested in her, and I’m interested in some other DC characters, and we’ll just see what happens next” – said the director.
Gunn is currently working on his upcoming HBO Max show, Peacemaker. The show will be about Christopher Smith, an extremist pacifist willing to kill any man, woman, or child for peace. In the streaming series John Cena reprises his role from The Suicide Squad.
