The PlayStation 5 Is Over 17 Million, and The PlayStation 4 Is “A Hundred” Ahead

Sony has released its financial report for the previous quarter, giving us a look at the statistics for the PlayStation brand for the October-December period.

In 2021’s final quarter, 3.9 million PlayStation 5 units were shipped. That’s a 0.6 million drop from a year earlier (when the console launched), as 4.5 million PS5s were shipped at the end of 2020. It brings the total for the new console to 17.2 million, including the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which does not have a Blu-ray drive and is therefore cheaper. (No separate statistics are known.) Only 200,000 PlayStation 4 units were shipped, a significant drop of 1.2 million at the end of 2020, when 1.4 million were shipped, which brings the PlayStation 4 to 116.8 million units, with the chances of it beating the PS2’s record of 155 million units becoming slimmer.

As usual, let’s look at the other statistics that are relevant to us. There were 48 million PlayStation Plus subscribers as of December 31. It’s not such a huge increase, as the service had a base of 47.4 million at the end of 2020, so it’s fair to say that the 600,000 growth is indeed low, especially given the size of the subscriber base compared to the total PlayStation 4 sales.

A total of 92.7 million PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games were sold in the last quarter of 2021. That’s quite a drop from 104.2 million for the two consoles in the same period a year earlier, a drop of 11.5 million for Jim Ryan’s team. Of these, 11.3 million were first-party, in-house developments (with another decline of 7.7 million, compared to 19 million at the end of 2020). There is a more financially advantageous change for Sony and more convenient for us. The proportion of game sales on PlayStation Store, i.e. digital, was 62%, up 9% from 53% a year earlier.

The first quarter of 2022 should be strong, with Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 coming, so we should see at least a spike in first-party game sales.
