The game has barely been released yet, but Horizon Forbidden West game director Mathijs de Jonge promises a sequel that will build on the big reveal at the end of the previous game.

 

 

Horizon Forbidden West is one of a series of sequels that builds on its predecessor, in this case, Horizon Zero Dawn. It adds several new machines and weapon types to the game while significantly expanding Aloy’s arsenal, but the progress is there across the board.

The sequel’s plot takes place a few months after the events of the original game. Zero Dawn has unravelled most of the mysteries, and by the end of the game, almost all the questions raised have been answered. Developer Guerrilla Games hinted at a sequel in the post-credits scene, and Forbidden West used it as the basis for its story. Now, it seems that developer Guerrilla Games is teasing a sequel to Forbidden West.

In an interview with VG247, Forbidden West game director Mathijs de Jonge spoke about the game’s completion. He states that the Horizon series is about exploring the mysteries of the old world and the present. He also mentions that Guerrilla Games can draw on the rich and extensive backstory to create new secrets and story threads.

Like Zero Dawn, Forbidden West will end with a cliffhanger, and Mathijs confirms that the team will use the ending sequence to set things up for the next game.

Horizon is a massively successful franchise, with Zero Dawn selling over 20 million copies on PS4 and PC. So it’s no surprise that Guerrilla Games is continuing to release more games in the series. However, there is no information on when fans can expect the sequel. It’s worth noting that Zero Dawn later received an expansion, The Frozen Wilds, in 2017, which was similarly well-received. So it will be interesting to see if Guerilla Games decides to release a similar expansion for Forbidden West to bridge the gap between the mainline games.

A recent rumour has shed some light on some of Guerrilla Games’ projects in development.

According to this leak, the developer has been working on a multiplayer shooter for three years now, with one source saying it’s a new SOCOM game. The leak mentions that Horizon will be a trilogy and that Sony is considering it as one of the PlayStation’s most important franchises. It also claims that a VR spinoff is also in development, which is confirmed to be called Horizon Call of the Mountain, and that an online game similar to the Monster Hunter series is also in the works. Of course, all leaks should be treated with caution, but these announcements seem plausible.

Horizon Forbidden West is available now for PS4 and PS5.
