Is Blizzard Going Towards NFTs? The Company’s President Denies It!

Mike Ybarra, Blizzard’s president, also reacted to the VGC article: he denied one issue and did not mention the other!

But let’s start at the beginning. Activision Blizzard is not yet involved with the NFTs, and who knows, maybe once the obstacles for Microsoft to acquire the publisher are removed, the company formed at the end of 2007 will play a significant role in building the metaverse. Konami and Atari have already started to sell unique digital objects on the blockchain. Still, the whole thing has been criticized as being particularly harmful to the environment because of its high carbon emissions.

In the annual State of the Game Industry report of the GDC (Game Developers Conference), more than 2700 developers were surveyed, and most of them are not interested in NFTs. One of the questions in the questionnaire published in January was the studio’s opinion of NFTs. 70% of the respondents were not interested, 21% were only slightly interested, and 7% were very interested, but only 1% of the respondents had already developed something on the topic. And this tweet says that Activision Blizzard has been trying to snoop around crypto/NFT: they received a questionnaire in which the question came up.

Jorge Murillo, a senior designer at Blizzard, publicly criticized the trend on Twitter in January. He is one of the developers of Overwatch, and he stressed that he rejects NFTs and will fight not to have them integrated into the game. And the VGC article (which has since been amended) got a response from Ybarra. Blizzard’s president responded succinctly that “No one is doing NFTs” – but the play-to-earn model (pay for play), what about that…? Maybe some cryptocurrency concept is already happening within the publisher, but Microsoft could cut that off.

Square Enix’s president openly supports the concept (and he already expressed his opinion in his open letter at the beginning of January); it was mentioned today…
