SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis Mini 2: SEGA Launches Another Mini Console [VIDEO]

SEGA’s small console will support SEGA CD (Mega CD) games, and the game list includes titles that were not originally released for the 16-bit console.

The SEGA Genesis (outside North America, it’s called Mega Drive) Mini 2 will also be smaller than the previous model: measuring 120.8×32.33×116.5 mm, the hardware will come with more than 50 games and will display games in 480p and 720p resolutions. Among the cassette titles confirmed by SEGA are Bonanza Bros, Fantasy Zone, Magical Taruruuto-kun, Shining in the Darkness, Thunder Force IV (Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar), and Virtua Racing. SEGA CD games include Mansion of Hidden Souls, Popful Mail, Shining Force CD, Silpheed, and Sonic the Hedgehog CD.

The mini console is currently confirmed by SEGA for Japan only. It will be available domestically from October 27 for 9980 yen (about $77). There will also be a cosmetic Genesis/Mega Drive Tower Mini 2 add-on for 4500 yen (about $35), which will provide the SEGA CD 2 Mini, Virtua Racing mini cassette, Sonic the Hedgehog CD mini disc, and a Super 32X Mini mounting spacer. You can also buy six-button controllers for fighting games for 2,500 yen (nearly $20).

SEGA is planning further coverage of the Genesis/Mega Drive Mini 2. Each of these streams is named after subtitles from the Yakuza series. On June 24, at 11 AM UTC, there will be a stream called Fulfiller of Dreams, in mid-July, The Song of Life, in early August, Whereabouts of Light and Darkness, and in late August, The Place of Oath will follow. During these, SEGA will undoubtedly reveal more games, and there may be some talk of releasing the new mini console in North America and Europe.

As Nintendo has not announced anything recently (but there are rumours of an N64 mini/Classic…), SEGA would have no competition in the market.
