These days, it’s no joke to say that id Software’s revolutionary classic FPS game could run on a toaster…
It’s been almost twenty years since the release of DOOM. id Software went even bigger after Wolfenstein 3D (and the sequel was able to expand on that, and then Quake shook up the gaming industry as a true three-dimensional FPS…). Nowadays, there’s almost a subculture of people trying to get Doomguy’s (name: Doom Guy…) demon-slaying to work on virtually anything. Several examples have been reported in recent years.
There’s a subreddit for all of it, and the latest example, and we have to take a breath before we name it, it’s that unusual, is a Canon ScanFront 220P scanner. The Reddit user who goes by the name wertercatt chose this device because it runs a Windows operating system. Thanks to Windows CE, it’s no wonder that DOOM is running on the machine, and since the scanner allows you to connect a mouse and keyboard to it, you can use the hardware for other things in no time. The user did point out that another user, thenogli implemented the port.
The source code for DOOM was released by id Software in 1997 (and then we might ask, when will Microsoft release id Tech 5’s? The last one we got was for DOOM 3 BFG, i.e. you can access the source code from id Tech 4…), so in the two and a half decades since then, we’ve seen a lot of crazy ideas. One of them recently was the idea that you could run DOOM in your computer’s BIOS. This means that the PC can ONLY be used for it because you need the BIOS (basic input/output system) to run Windows; technically, the BIOS is the central nervous system of the device. Karaoke machine, MacBook Pro touch bar, NES, thermostat…
What will we see DOOM on next? On a SodaStream device? (Now, if someone can make that happen, we’ll run out of the world.)
