With the Overwatch 2 beta recently launched and the game coming this fall, players looking for new content are excited, but some questions remain about the transition.
As Overwatch 2 is a live service game, it offers all sorts of different currencies and collectables – will these be carried over to the new instalment? What about loot boxes? There aren’t supposed to be any in the second episode, so what happens to the loot boxes you collected in the first episode when you switch over?
Blizzard shed some light on the subject in a recent Reddit AMA.
All Overwatch 1 currency (credits, OWL tokens, tournament points) will indeed be transferred over, but they did give advance warning that they will likely be limited. Blizzard claims that a new virtual currency will be introduced in Overwatch 2, and some things will only be available for purchase with it. As for loot boxes, all your loot boxes will be automatically opened when you switch over, so you won’t lose anything.

So, the thing is, it’s not worth getting too attached to the idea that our various Overwatch currencies will be worth much in the second part. Presumably, most of the best stuff will only be available to those who have Blizzard’s new virtual currency because that’s just the way it is in the cruel, exploitative capitalist video game world…
If all goes according to plan, Overwatch 2 will be released on October 4 for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch. The game’s beta launched on June 16.
